Even at the end of the world, you have to choose between Barcelona  and Real Madrid. I mean that literally. When standing at the edge of the Western Hemisphere in Punta Arenas, Chile, the hottest selling jerseys offered at the local shops are the whites of Real and the stripes of Barcelona. That drove it home for me: these two teams straddle the globe in a way that no other two can claim.

There are more costly franchises than the Spanish giants, of course: Manchester United is currently said to be most valuable bunch in the world. There are clubs with equally fanatic followings. Does anybody have a core of supporters who match the unswerving devotion that bleeds for Glasgow Celtic or Rangers? And there any national teams whose fans will literally follow them around the world? Brazil certainly fits that description, but so do smaller soccer nations like Ireland and Scotland in terms of devoted support.
But there isn’t anything truly like Barcelona and Real Madrid: whose rivalry is so intense that it’s hard to mention one side without thinking of the other. The great rivals collide again on Saturday for the 219th time. The meeting in the Camp Nou would be special on its own merits, but this contest has even more at stake than usual.

Start with the fact that Real Madrid is four points ahead of Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title. While Real cannot leave Barcelona in second place Saturday night, a defeat could cast a long shadow in their bid to end Barca’s three year reign in La Liga. Any slip-up down the road could cost Real Madrid the title. If the teams finish level on points and Barcelona wins on Saturday, the title would go to the Catalans; who won the first league meeting this season in Madrid, and would hold the head-to-head tie-breaker. The Spanish crown is awarded on that basis in case of a tie, not on goal difference.

Then there's the personal battle between the two men who dominate the current game: Barcelona's Lionel Messi, and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Both men enter Saturday's fray with a Spanish-record 41 goals, in a head-to-head battle for the scoring championship. Messi has tallied 63 times in all competitions, and is chasing Gerd Muller's all-time European record of 67 set back in the 1972-1973 campaign. Equally impressive, Ronaldo has scored 53 times in all competitions this season. Even though both teams lost their first leg Champions League ties this past week, both are still expected to meet in the May 19 final in Munich. That offers both the prospect of achieving a ‘double’ over the hated enemy.
In fact, for all that is clearly at stake on the field this Saturday, the off-the-field history between these teams is so much a part of the story that it overshadows each individual game. For instance, during the Spanish Civil War, the division between Barcelona and Madrid — and between the region of Catalonia and the rest of Spain — was one of the grimmest episodes of the 20th century.
